Let The AI Drive Your Car
Imagine this, you plan to visit your parents for Christmas. It’s almost an 11-hour long drive from Washington to Grangeville, Idaho. You start early all energized and everything feels fine. After 4 hours of straight driving the fatigue sets in. There is no rest stop for miles so you have to keep going, but gradually the body gives in to the tiredness.
A couple of things can happen at this juncture. One, you park your car at the side of the road to take a break which has its own safety dilemmas. Two, you lose control of the car and crash it. The second option is what happens in most car crashes.
Fatigue or any other kind of physiological disability causes the driver to lose control over the car, leading to accidents that not only endangers the one behind the wheel and the passengers but also the others on the road. Now, imagine if there was a car that was smart enough to take over the steering by detecting the fatigue or other physical condition of the driver! Some might think it to be sci-fi but the tech geniuses will beg to differ.
Several technology start-ups are working their way towards building AI-driven software that can act driver to the humans when time calls for it.
Recently a Germany based start-up announced that they are building a software based on Artificial Intelligence that can detect human emotions and physical conditions. Knowing that, it can take over the control of the car in case the driver under distress. The AI driven car will have sensors in place which will be able to detect psychological and physical changes in the driver and act accordingly.
So in case the driver falls asleep, or gets tired or distracted the AI software will adjust the driving controls minimizing the risk of a car crash and fatalities. Several other automobile and tech companies are also working on likewise projects to utilize AI for auto safety.
Now that the idea of an AI-driven car has been established, let’s go back to the scenario with which we started the write-up. With a car like that, as soon as you start feeling fatigued, the car sensors will detect that and take over the wheel. You can get rest while the AI takes care of the driving and you reach home safely to celebrate Christmas with your parents.
